Pirates vs. Brewers Prediction and Pick

Jose Quintana is one of the hottest names on the trade market come the end of the month and his last few starts could be viewed as his audition for contending teams. The middle of June was the toughest stretch of Quintana’s season, but since June 23 he has been really solid and increased the return that Pittsburgh will get for him at the deadline.

Quintana has a 3.33 ERA, a 3.36 fielding independent pitching, a better than average walk rate to go with a league average strikeout rate. A few signs of concern for acquiring teams or bettors are his expected ERA of 4.50 and his changeup which has a run value of nine. It is by far his worst pitch and yet he is throwing it 24.2% of the time, easily the highest usage of his career.

His numbers may regress in the second half of the season because of these indicators, but for now he is a successful pitcher from the left side who should give the left-handed heavy Milwaukee lineup some issues. They have a .684 OPS against southpaws compared to a .745 against right handed pitching.

Quintana could neutralize some of the most intimidating parts of the Brewers lineup and make the Pirates a good bet as an underdog.

Pick: Pirates +150
