The Colorado Avalanche had a disappointing end to their 2020-2021 NHL season. After gaining a 2-0 series lead on the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup quarterfinals, they lost four straight games to end their playoff run.
Despite the heartbreaking end to their campaign, the Avs are re-tooled, re-focused and many people expect them to be the team to beat this upcoming season.
WynnBET has them set as +475 favorites to win this year’s Stanley Cup, as well as overwhelming -220 favorites to win the Central Division.
WynnBET has also recently released odds to win the President’s Trophy, and to no one’s surprise, Colorado is atop the list.
The Presidents’ Trophy is awarded to the team who finishes the regular season with the best record.

Is the Presidents' Trophy Cursed?
Unlike other professional sport leagues in North America, the team that wins the regular season in the NHL has historically not found success in the postseason, especially in recent years.
In fact, dating back to the lockout in the 2004-05 season, the winner of the Presidents’ Trophy has lost in the first round of the playoffs more often than they have made the Stanley Cup Finals. You read that right, I’m not even talking about winning the Stanley Cup, I’m just talking about actually being in the Finals.
Since the 2004-05 campaign, the President’s Cup winner has lost in the first round of the playoffs a total of five times, but they’ve made it to the Stanley Cup Finals three times, and won it twice.
The Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks won the Cup after finishing the regular season with the best record in 2007-2008 and 2012-2013 respectively, and the Vancouver Canucks made the Finals as Presidents’ Trophy winners in 2010-2011, but fell to the Boston Bruins.
As a whole, the trophy has been awarded 33 times, but only eight of the winners have gone on to win the Stanley Cup.
The Tampa Bay Lightning won it in 2018-2019, but followed it up by getting swept by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ironically, the Lightning didn’t win the Presidents’ Trophy in the next two seasons, but went on to win the Stanley Cup in both.
