Ranking NFL Super Bowl Contenders Right Now
We're officially in the final stretch of the NFL season.
With six weeks left to play before we reach the postseason, it's time to separate the contenders from the pretenders.
In my opinion, there are eight teams that have announced their presence to the football world as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. Let's take a dive into who those eight teams are, and what their odds are to be crowned Super Bowl 56 champions. All odds listed are via WynnBET.
8. Baltimore Ravens (8-3) +1100
The Baltimore Ravens got a statement win in the AFC North in Week 12, edging the Cleveland Browns on Sunday Night Football. Their explosive offense can keep pace with any team in the NFL if they're firing on all cylinders. Surprisingly, the only thing keeping them from being ranked higher is their defense, which is usually among the best in the league.
The Ravens rank 30th in both opponent yards per play and opponent yards per pass attempt. If they can find a way to sure up their secondary, they can make a deep run in the postseason.
7. Kansas City Chiefs (7-4) +700
I'm sorry Chiefs fans. I know Patrick Mahomes is electric and I know you're tied with the Bills for the third shortest odds to win the Super Bowl, but you should at least be happy I consider your team a legit contender.
You can't discount a team that has Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce on offense, but Kansas City has had a strange season so far. Their defense has looked extremely vulnerable at times, and Mahomes has already thrown 11 interceptions on the year. To be fair, it could have just been a slump that every team goes through, as the Chiefs have now won four straight games.
6. Dallas Cowboys (7-4) +1200
The Cowboys have the same problem that both the Ravens and Chiefs do, their defense is porous. They rank 27th in opponent yards per play, and teams have found success throwing the ball against them.
With that being said, the Cowboys offense leads the NFL in yards per play, so they're good enough to win even with a weak defense. The problem is that when their offense lays an egg, like they did against the Broncos a few weeks back, their defense won't be able to step up and win any games for them.
5. New England Patriots (8-4) +1000
The New England Patriots are the hottest team in the NFL, having won six straight games, but let's not forget that they have a rookie quarterback leading the way. A good defense and an efficient offense will win plenty of games, but that's usually not enough to get it done in the postseason.
The Patriots are certainly a contender and they belong on this list, but we'll see how far they go once they reach the postseason.
4. Arizona Cardinals (9-2) +800
The Arizona Cardinals hold the best record in the NFL and if Kyler Murray can stay healthy, we might find them playing in Los Angeles for Super Bowl 56. They have a stacked receiving corps, a dynamic quarterback, and a solid defense. The Cardinals defense ranks eighth in opponent yards per play, which could prove to be the difference maker this season.
We'll see how good and healthy the Cardinals look coming off their BYE in Week 13.
3. Buffalo Bills (7-4) +700
If you can ignore the dud games the Bills have played in this year, and focus solely on statistics, the Bills are the biggest contender in the NFL. They rank sixth in yards per play, and their defense ranks first in opponent yards per play.
Not being able to find ways to win games when they aren't clicking has been a problem for them, but if they're firing on all cylinders in the playoffs, they'll be tough to beat.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-3) +500
As a life-long Tom Brady hater, I've officially reached the stage of acceptance and I will no longer count him out as long as he's playing in the NFL. This is still the exact same team that won last year's Super Bowl, and there's no reason why they can't repeat as champions. If there's one area where they're susceptible, its their secondary.
1. Green Bay Packers (9-3) +550
The Green Bay Packers officially became top Super Bowl contenders after dismantling the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon. Aaron Rodgers is once again one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, but now he has a defense he can rely on as well.
The Packers rank sixth in opponent yards per play and fifth in opponent yards per pass attempt. This could finally be the team that helps Rodgers get his second Super Bowl ring.
