Recent Form vs. Experience: Which is Most Important at Southern Hills for the PGA Championship?
The PGA Championship is set to tee-off tomorrow morning, and before we place our final bets, one last thing should be considered.
What should we value more at Southern Hills. Course experience or recent form?
The obvious answer is recent form, especially considering the last time the PGA Championship was held here was back in 2007. But with that being said, let's take a look at a few golfers who benefit from either side of this debate.
All odds listed below are via WynnBET Sportsbook.
Past Experience at Southern Hills
With the last PGA Championship held here being back in 2007, only a handful of golfers will be playing it for the second time. The list of those golfers, and their odds, are below:
- Tiger Woods +10000
- Adam Scott +11500
- Justin Rose +16000
- Lee Westwood +40000
- Stewart Cink +50000
- Lucas Glover +70000
- John Daly +500000
- Y.E. Yang +500000
The 2009 U.S. Amateur was also held at Southern Hills, so there are a couple of golfers who played here for that tournament as well. Those in the field this week who competed here in 2009 include:
- Talor Gooch +11000
- Brian Harman +17500
- Rickie Fowler +30000
- Cameron Tringale +30000
With all of that being said, I wouldn't recommend betting on any golfers this week solely due to them competing here once over a decade ago. Not only was that so long ago, but the course itself has changed. It will play over 400 yards longer than it did in 2007, and there have also been minor renovations. It's something to keep in the back of your mind, but I'd much rather look at recent form.
Recent Form Ahead of PGA Championship
Recent form is one of the best indicators of success in golf, especially at major tournaments.
Take Scottie Scheffler for example, who just won his first major at last month's Masters. He won three of the five events he competed in before the Masters, and added on a T7 in a fourth event. If that's not entering a tournament in fantastic form, than I don't know what is.
It's one of the main reasons why I gave out Xander Schauffele as my top pick in my betting preview. In his last two starts, he won the Zurich Classic and then finished T5 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, which included a Sunday score of 61.
Before placing a wager on a golfer to win this week, I'd highly recommend looking at how they've performed in recent tournaments.
