The Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians have each turned their season around after slow starts and meet this afternoon in Game 2 of their weekend series. The Guardians currently lead the AL Central at 36-30, while the Red Sox still trail the Yankees and Blue Jays in the AL East.

The Red Sox have a lot of work to do to get back towards the top of the division as they trail New York by 12 games overall. The Guardians are 7-3 straight up in their last 10 games, while the Red Sox are 8-2 in that same time. One of those wins for Boston includes a 6-3 victory in Game 1 of this series.

Red Sox vs. Guardians Prediction and Pick

After last night’s win, the Red Sox have won five in a row, as they desperately try to keep pace with the Yankees. They are only a half-game behind Toronto, but still have a lot of work to do if they have a shot to win this division. Today, the Red Sox will give John Winchkowski his fourth start of the season after an impressive run in the minors. Winchowski enters today with a 3.68 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 14 ⅔ innings. However, there is a lot more to dislike about Winckowski than his stats suggest.

In his three starts, he faced three very bad teams in the Orioles, A’s, and Tigers. The O’s destroyed him in his MLB debut and he’s yet to really be tested at the big league level. His WHIP is also quite bad which leads me to believe his struggles are just beginning.

The Guardians, meanwhile, are hoping that Shane Bieber can remain hot in his fifth start of the month. Bieber has been fantastic for Cleveland with a 3.00 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 78 innings. In June, things have been even better for Bieber, and I like his chances to stay hot today against the Red Sox. That’s not to say he won't have his work cut out for him. The Red Sox are third in MLB in batting average, fifth in runs per game, and eighth in on-base percentage. The Red Sox haven’t scored less than five runs during their current win streak and Bieber will have his hands full today.

Despite this, Bieber is on a heater himself and I think has the chops to out-duel Boston and even up this series at home.

Pick: Guardians ML -152
