The Detroit Tigers host the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday in the second game of their three-game tilt on Tuesday.

The Red Sox entered the week after dropping two of three from the New York Yankees. Boston was able to take the final game of the series 4-3 on Sunday. The Tigers, meanwhile, lost two of three to the White Sox before taking Game 1 Monday afternoon.

Rich Hill is slated to start for the Red Sox with Tyler Alexander toeing the rubber for the Tigers. Both are making their regular-season debut.

Red Sox vs. Tigers Prediction and Pick

Let’s start off with the starters for Tuesday’s Game 2. I have to say that I don’t have much faith in either one to put together a quality start to kick off the year. Alexander worked in relief for most of last season before the Tigers stretched him out in July to begin starting games. He ended the year with a career-high 106 ⅓ inning pitched and a 2-4 record. He was productive, but not very impressive. He doesn’t walk many batters, but he also doesn’t have the stuff to get regular strikeouts against upper-tier teams. For what it’s worth, Alexander pitched twice against the Red Sox last season. In four innings he gave up three earned runs for an ERA over 5.00. I will say he looked sharp in Spring Training. Alexander threw 8 ⅔ innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts and three walks. It was by far his best spring to date.

On the other side of the diamond, the Red Sox are going with the veteran Hill to start tonight. The 42 year old southpaw went 7-8 last season with a 3.86 ERA and 150 strikeouts. Honestly, the guy is 42 and posted a 9.35 ERA in 8 ⅔ innings this spring. His WHIP was 1.73 and he gave up 14 hits and nine earned runs.

Hill is a huge liability here with the Tigers lineup full of talent. Javy Baez and Austin Meadows are off to hot starts this year at the plate. I think that Hill will help jump-start the rest of this offense as he continues to be a below-average 42-year-old starter. He's no Jamie Moyer, that's for sure.

Pick: Tigers ML (+111)
