The New York Yankees are looking to complete the sweep of the Boston Red Sox to open the season when they battle on Sunday Night Baseball.

New York will send lefty Jordan Montgomery to the mound against Tanner Houck, who has pitched well against New York in his young career. Houck has thrown 19.1 innings against the Yankees over the last two seasons and has held them to just a .141 batting average and allowed just four earned runs in five games (three starts).

Boston’s bullpen hasn’t done it any favors early in the season, but the Red Sox have a chance to take advantage of Montgomery, who has an expected batting average against of .248 in this matchup, per Baseball Savant.

Let’s get into the odds via WynnBET for this Sunday Night Baseball showdown:

Red Sox vs. Yankees Odds, Run Line and Total

Run Line:

  • Red Sox +1.5 (-155)
  • Yankees -1.5 (+135)

Moneyline:

  • Red Sox: +130
  • Yankees: -140

Total:

  • 8.5 (Over -115/Under -105)

Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction and Pick

The Yankees have come up with timely hitting and solid bullpen performances to take the first two games of the series, but I think that changes tonight.

Boston knocked Montgomery around last season, posting a BAbip (batting average on balls in play) of .312 and scoring 10 runs on him in 27.1 innings. Montgomery did strike out a ton of Boston batters last year, 25 to be exact, but he walked seven over five starts as well.

If Houck can stick to his MO and keep the ball in the yard (just four homers allowed in 69 innings last season), the Yankees may struggle until they get to Boston’s bullpen.

From there it is a bit of a crapshoot, as the Red Sox watched their pen blow the game on Opening Day, but I think the Yankees are due for some regression after two straight lights out days from the ‘pen.

I’ll take Boston outright to win on Sunday Night Baseball and salvage the series.
