The New York Yankees won their season opener against the Boston Red Sox yesterday 6-5, despite trailing the entire game. All 10 ½ innings in fact. But, newly acquired Josh Donaldson capped off his debut in pinstripes with a walk-off single. It was the first time the Yankees had a walk-off win on opening day since Yogi Berra was behind the plate. Anthony Rizzo added a two-run diner while Stanton lead off the fourth with a bomb. It was a nice bit of revenge after the BoSox beat the Yankees in the AL Wild Card game last year.

The opening series rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox continues today in the Bronx. Here are the odds for this showdown, courtesy of WynnBET Sportsbook

Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction and Pick

Today’s starting pitchers for this AL battle are Nick Pivetta and Luis Severino. Pivetta is coming off a rather lackluster year that saw him finish 9-8 with a 4.53 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. While that sounds pretty bad, it actually represents an above-average season for Pivetta. His career average ERA is 5.16 and his career WHIP is 1.39. Pivetta had a decent spring, going 1-1 in four starts with a 3.45 ERA in 15 ⅔ innings. He fanned 22 while walking six. It was a very busy, and productive spring, but now that the games count, I struggle to trust Pivetta.

Severino, on the other hand, is a very difficult nut to crack. He hasn’t pitched much since February 2020 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He suited up for four games total in 2021 after being reactivated from the IL. He did not start any of those games and ended up pitching six innings in relief. He gave up just two hits and no runs while striking out eight. It was a nice performance, but too small of a sample size to base any prediction on. More recently, Severino struggled in spring training with an 8.22 ERA in 7 ⅔ innings pitched. This worries me as Severino tries to shut down a potent BoSox offense in game two of the season.

I don’t have much faith in either of these guys right now. The offense for each team looked good yesterday and I will bet on the bats in game two today.

Pick: OVER 9 (+100)
