Rocket Mortgage Classic Sleepers, Dark Horses Picks, and Longshots (Long Drivers Could Provide Sneaky Edge)
The Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club will serve as the penultimate event in the PGA Tour's regular season.
I've already given you my top 3 picks to win, as well as other bets I placed on this week's episode of Green on the Greens (see below), but now let's dive into some longshot bets for those of you who like to live on the edge and get a big payout on a small wager.
All odds listed below are via WynnBET Sportsbook.
Dark Horse Picks for the Rocket Mortgage Classic
Luke List +7000
As I pointed out in my betting preview, strokes gained: off-the-tee has proven to be an important factor in this event in years past. So, if we're looking for longshots, a good place to start is golfers who have been performing well with their driver.
Luke List is one of those guys, as he enters the event ranked seventh on the PGA Tour in that stat.
His recent form hasn't been great, which is why we're getting such a long number on him, but he finished a respectable 21st at this event in 2020, so he does have some experience here.
Trey Mullinax +10000
Trey Mullinax just won a PGA Tour event two weeks ago at the Barbasol Championship. Sure, it was one of the weaker fields on the schedule, but a win is a win and it's not like this week has a star-studded lineup.
He ranks 23rd in SG: off-the-tee, and he's one of the longest drivers on Tour. His solid wedge game should also help him at this track. He's worth a sprinkle at 100/1.
Nate Lashley +12500
If you use past experience at a course as part of your handicapping process (as you should), how about a former winner of the event?
Nate Lashley's only PGA Tour victory came at the first edition of this tournament back in 2019, and he won in a landslide, cruising to a six-stroke victory.
He hasn't been playing as well this year, but it has to be comforting to return to a course that you've won at before. If his putter can get hot, he could be in contention come Sunday.
