The Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates are primed for Game 2 of a three-game series at PNC Park. The Rockies entered this series at 19-21 after dropping two of three games to the New York Mets.

It was the fifth series loss in a row for Colorado after starting the year 15-10. Things are not going much better in Pittsburgh where the Pirates lost six of their last seven games outright heading into this series. They were swept by the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend and are considered one of the worst teams in the league.

Rockies vs. Pirates Prediction and Pick

The Pirates have yet to announce their starter for this game so predicting the outcome is a bit tricky. However, we can look at their team stats and glean some information from their combined efforts on the mound.

For example, the Pirates have the fifth-worst bullpen ERA in the MLB at 4.51 and the second-worst overall ERA of 4.96. This is important because whoever makes a spot start for Pitt is likely to go less than five innings. This leaves a lot of work for a very bad bullpen.

The Pirates are hitting just .224 at the plate and won’t offer their mystery starter much run support. It could be a very rough game for Pittsburgh.

Kyle Freeland will be starting for Colorado in what has been a very average season for the southpaw so far. His 4.85 ERA and 1.57 WHIP are right around his career averages. I don’t expect much more from him moving forward than just doing enough to give the Rockies bats a chance.

He has given up five or more runs in three of eight starts so far and is very inconsistent in terms of strikeouts. In some games he strikes out eight, others one or none.

Despite his issues, I still trust Freeland more than whoever the Pirates send out to pitch today. I’m going to side with the Devil I know here.

Pick: Rockies ML (-105)
