Rutgers vs. Boston College Prediction, Odds, Spread and Over/Under for College Football Week 1
By Josh Yourish
Both the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Boston College Eagles kick off their seasons this week, as the Big Ten and ACC squads get their non-conference schedule off and running.
Jeff Hafley begins his third year as the head coach of the Eagles, and has the second most wins of any coach hired in the 2020 coaching cycle. B.C. returns their starting quarterback, Phil Jurkovec, for his final season in Chestnut Hill.
Greg Schiano made his triumphant return to Piscataway, New Jersey last year and had the Scarlet Knights bowl eligible for the first time since 2014, their first year in the Big Ten.

Rutgers vs. Boston College Prediction and Pick
A year ago, the Rutgers' passing offense ranked 114th in the nation, and they have no more clarity at the quarterback position than they did a year ago. Noah Vedral likely starts the year at QB after completing just under 60% of his passes for 1,823 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions a year ago. However, there is some competition, as many believe Gavin Wimsatt, who played in four games as a freshman last year, eventually takes over.
With Vedral set to start this week, that's a good sign for a Boston College defense that ranked third in passing yards allowed per game in 2021. Jeff Hafley is a defensive minded coach and he will likely be happy with his team’s performance in Week 1.
The real story in this one is Jurkovec. Boston College’s starting quarterback and former four-star recruit enters his third year as the starter at B.C. after two years backing up Ian Book at Notre Dame. Jurkovec played well when healthy in 2021 throwing for 914 yards, seven touchdowns and four picks in just six games. Some of those games he only saw limited action.
Some see Jurkovec as a dark-horse Heisman candidate if he can stay healthy, and though Rutgers should be improved from last season, I have them starting off 0-1, losing convincingly on the road.
PICK: Boston College -7.5
