San Francisco 49ers 2022 NFL Season Betting Preview (Trey Lance Era Has Begun)

The San Francisco 49ers were one quarter away from advancing to Super Bowl 56 in January, but fell short when the Los Angeles Rams stormed back to score 13 points in the final quarter.

Now, the 49ers enter a new era as Jimmy Garoppolo has been sidelined, and second-year quarterback Trey Lance has been handed the starting gig.

With the rest of the roster largely returning for the 2022 season, can the 49ers take the next step with their new quarterback? Or, will growing pains for the young signal caller lead to a disappointing campaign?

San Francisco 49ers Offseason Moves and Signings

• Starting Center Alex Mac Retired
• Signed CB Charvarius Ward from the Chiefs
• Selected DE Drake Jackson from USC with their first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, 61st overall.
• Offensive Coordinator Mike McDaniel left to be head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
• Signed S Tashaun Gipson from the Bears.
• Signed WR Willie Snead from the Panthers.

San Francisco 49ers 2022 Schedule

The 49ers start their season with a Week 1 matchup with the Chicago Bears in Chicago.

They'll play in five prime time games in the 2022 season:

• Week 3 at Broncos (Sunday Night Football)
• Week 4 vs. Rams (Monday Night Football)
• Week 10 vs. Chargers (Sunday Night Football)
• Week 11 vs. Cardinals (Monday Night Football in Mexico City)
• Week 15 at Seahawks (Thursday Night Football)

Week 9 will serve as the team's BYE Week.

San Francisco 49ers 2022 Win Total Prediction

• OVER 10 Wins (-110)
• UNDER 10 Wins (-110)

It'’s pretty simple. Do you think Trey Lance will thrive in his first year as the starting quarterback? If you think he will, take the OVER on their win total. Think he won’t? Take the UNDER.

I’m not saying anything groundbreaking, but it’s the truth.

For the most part, they’re bringing back the core unit as last year, and they were in the NFC Championship. The "X-Factor" is how Lance will perform in his first year as "the guy".

I tend to think there’s going to be some growing pains for Lance. He hasn't played a full season of football since 2019, and it was in the FCS. He started two games last season, but he didn't do anything remarkable.

If there are some growing pains this season, expect the 49ers to stumble out of the gates. With the NFL only have a 17 game schedule, you can't afford to start slow. If they do, they'll go UNDER their win total this season.

As I pointed out on Monday's episode of Daily Betslip (timestamped below), I think the 49ers are going to miss the playoffs in 2022.

Their season comes down to the performance of Trey Lance. And while people like to make fun of Jimmy G last season, the numbers show he was an effective quarterback. Lance will need to put up the same levels of production this season if they want to be successful, and I'm not saying he won't eventually get to that point, but it's going to take him some time.

Time that the 49ers can't afford to take in 2022.
