Scottish Open power rankings (Who Are The Best Golfers at The Renaissance Club?)
The best golfers in the world are on their way to Europe in preparation for the final major tournament of the season, The Open Championship.
But, before that, we have the Scottish Open. This will be the third year that the event will be a joint tournament between the DP World Tour (Formerly known as the European Tour) and the PGA Tour. Plenty of the top golfers use this event as a final warm up for next week's Open Championship, so you'll see a ton of big names competing at The Renaissance Club this week.
Should Xander Schauffele be considered a top contender this year after winning the Scottish Open in 2022? Let's see if he cracks my top 10 power rankings for this week's event.
Scottish Open Power Rankings
1) Scottie Scheffler +700
Don't let his lack of recent wins fool you. The No. 1 ranked golfer in the world is still exactly that. In fact, his recent strings of finishes is arguably even more impressive than a handful of wins sprinkled throughout the season. He hasn't finished worse than T12 in 18 (!!) straight starts. The last time he finished outside the top 12 was at the CJ Cup last October.
On top of that, he has finished in the top five in six straight starts.
He's the rightful favorite and probably worth a bet at his current price.
2) Rory McIlroy +750
Rory McIlroy has been in fantastic form lately and is flirting with returning to the winner's circle. He has finished in the top 10 in five straight starts including a solo second place finish at the US Open. He has never won the Scottish Open, but he's always going to feel comfortable playing in Europe.
3) Xander Schauffele +1400
Xander Schauffele, the defending champion, is another golfer who has been in fantastic form of late. He has posted 10 straight top 25 finishes, but hasn't managed to seal the deal in any of them. Last year, he won back-to-back events at the Travelers and then the Scottish Open. He finished T19 at the Travelers this year, but maybe he can defend his title at the Renaissance Club.
4) Rickie Fowler +1600
Rickie Fowler has been Mr. Consistent this season in what has been a career resurgence. But, bettors were staying away from picking to him to win due to his history of Sunday collapses and failure to deliver under pressure. Well, that changed at the Rocket Mortgage Classic when he finally captured that elusive win.
With that monkey off his back, I wouldn't be completely shocked if he manages to notch a few more wins before 2023 is over.
5) Viktor Hovland +1800
Viktor Hovland has always performed well at links golf courses, and his recent string of successful starts makes him a strong candidate again this week. If there's one red flag it's his T29 finish at The Travelers Championship, but there's no denying this course fits his style of play much better.
6) Tyrrell Hatton +2500
Believe it or not, it's Tyrrell Hatton who ranks third on the PGA Tour this season in total strokes gained, behind only Scheffler and Jon Rahm. This will be his first start since the U.S. Open, but now that he's back in Europe, he could have an edge on his American counterparts.
7) Patrick Cantlay +1400
Patrick Cantlay continues to get priced near the top of the odds board and I still don't understand why. Sure, he's one of the more talented golfers in this field, but he has done nothing this season to warrant a +1400 price tag. I'm staying away.
8) Tommy Fleetwood +2200
Tommy Fleetwood just can't seem to win on American soil, despite playing some of the best golf of his career. Perhaps returning to the United Kingdom is exactly what he needed to capture a victory.
9) Jordan Spieth +2200
Jordan Spieth is a roller coaster of a golfer to bet on. Just look at his last three starts as proof. He missed the cut, then finished T5, then missed the cut again. His highs are high and his lows are low. That's enough for me to stay away from betting on him, but if you think you can catch him on a high, go for it.
10) Matt Fitzpatrick +2000
Matt Fitzpatrick is another European golfer returning to where he feels comfortable, but his recent numbers aren't convincing. His approach play continues to be inconsistent and he's coming off a T49 finish at the Travelers Championship. I think there's better golfers to bet on at 20/1.
