Sell Your Luka Doncic MVP Stock
I was one of the main people on the “Luka Doncic for MVP” train before the season started.
Now, just six games into the season, I’m going to be the driver of the train telling you to sell your Luka Doncic MVP stock.
This is the second straight season Doncic has come into the year as the favorite to win the MVP and has started slow. It’s crazy to think of a person averaging 22.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game and starting slow, but that just shows where the bar is for Doncic.
Doncic is shooting 23.8% from behind the arc and less than 43% from the floor overall. His scoring is down and that will be a downfall of his case.
What will truly be the downfall of his MVP campaign is Jason Kidd’s coaching. Kidd has shown in just six games that he’s learned nothing in his time off or from his stint in Milwaukee. Dallas has gone from having one of the most prolific offenses in NBA history to having a bottom five offense this season (99.3 offensive rating).
The Mavericks are 4-2 so everything looks to be under control, but it is not. Dallas has a -4.4 net rating, which is in the bottom third of the league and suggests that its record is better than how the games are playing out.
Unless Doncic and the Mavericks continue to win games, and/or magically turn their offense into a juggernaut, there’s a ceiling of Doncic’s season -- and it's low.
