The Mercury have the second worst record in the league, but are trending in the right direction. Can the home underdog cash against an under .500 foe in the Sky?

The Mercury are trying to get out of the basement of the WNBA, now with the second worst record in the league, and will hope to keep building forward with a home win against the Sky.

Chicago has dropped three of four July games to fall to 8-12 on the year, but the team remains favored against the 5-15 on the road. Is that justified? Here are the odds for Thursday's matchup as two teams try to get towards .500.

Sky vs. Mercury prediction and pick

Given the recent form of each team, I disagree that the Mercury should be underdogs at home. In the month of July, Phoenix is outpacing Chicago on both sides of the ball, scoring nearly a full point more per 100 possessions and allowing nearly two less per 100, per WNBA.com.

While Phoenix is still towards the bottom of the league, the team is trending in the right direction as the likes of Brittney Griner have picked it up on the defensive side of the ball. Chicago's efficiency has plummeted, posting the third lowest true shooting percentage over its last four games.

Phoenix has allowed three of its last four opponents to 75 or fewer points, with the lone exception being the league best Aces on the road. Meanwhile, the Sky haven't scored more than 77 points in three straight games and I expect the struggles to continue on Thursday night on the road.
