Two 1-0 teams begin SEC play this week as the South Carolina Gamecocks travel to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks. South Carolina had an easy time with Georgia State last week to start Shane Beamer’s second year in Columbia with a win, while Sam Pittman’s team got a 31-24 win over No. 23 Cincinnati.

Now, they both are trying to stay undefeated and begin the gauntlet that is an SEC schedule.

South Carolina vs. Arkansas Prediction and Pick

Arkansas has a more talented roster, Sam Pittman has been a good recruiter and built an upper-echelon SEC roster and it showed in Week 1. The Razorbacks beat a well-coached Cincinnati team that is still talented despite a number of crucial departures.

The main arrival for South Carolina this year was Spencer Rattler who transferred from Oklahoma after getting replaced by Caleb Williams last season. Rattler was a highly-rated high school quarterback who was supposed to bridge the talent gap between the Gamecocks and other SEC teams. A great quarterback can do that.

The only problem is Spencer Rattler is not a great quarterback. Far from it in fact. He went 23-for-37 for 227 yards, one touchdown and two picks against Georgia State.

KJ Jefferson was much better than that against Cincinnati, and Jefferson is not one of the truly elite QBs in the conference. Jefferson went 18-for-26 for 223 and three touchdowns.

He also ran the ball 18 times for 62 yards and another score. Raheim Sanders was great out of the backfield and Trey Knox looks to be filling in Treylon Burks massive shoes nicely. Knox caught two touchdowns and finished six catches for 75 yards. Over half of his yardage from 2021 and double his touchdown total. The 6-5 tight end could be the Razorbacks breakout star.

Arkansas has the better quarterback and way more firepower. Rattler threw two picks against Georgia State and the Razorbacks defense is a huge step up in weight class. He will struggle and the Gamecocks could be looking for his replacement early in the season.

Pick: Arkansas -8.5 (-110)
