The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have bounced back from an abysmal start, win three in a row and looking like a real Notre Dame football team under first-year head coach Marcus Freeman at 3-2.

For Stanford at 1-4, it’s looking like more than just a bad start. Their only win so far came against Colgate, followed by four straight Pac 12 losses. Can Notre Dame keep the momentum going in this classic rivalry?

Stanford vs. Notre Dame Prediction and Pick

Since taking over for Tyler Buchner, Drew Pyne has excelled as the Notre Dame quarterback. He is 3-0 as the starter, completing 72.5% of his passes for 721 yards, along with nine passing touchdowns to just three interceptions. He has essentially unlocked this Notre Dame team, but they are still the 75th ranked team in total offense. In fact, Stanford is actually ahead of Notre Dame, ranking 69th.

The difference is the defense, Stanford ranks 111th in total defense while Notre Dame is 37th. Stanford does have the better quarterback in this game, even though Pyne has played well. Tanner McKee is considered one of the most underrated draft eligible quarterbacks in this class, much like Davis Mills was before him. McKee is capable of making very impressive throws, but the lack of talent around him has led to five interceptions. He has to try and force things at times, continuing to cost Stanford throughout the season.

In this game, I don’t love either offense. The Fighting Irish has played better with Pyne, but I do trust Notre Dame’s defense to get the job done, and that is enough for me to like the under.

Four of Notre Dame’s five games have gone under and while three of Stanford’s five games have gone over, that was against much better offenses like USC, Oregon, and Washington.

Pick: Under 53.5 (-107)
