Stanford vs. Washington State Prediction and Pick
The Stanford Cardinal will hit the field in Washington to try and rebound after a 28-10 loss to Arizona State. Led by QB Tanner McKee, the Cardinal are the slightest of favorites over their Pac-12 rivals.
McKee struggled to put the ball on target in that loss to AZ State, completing just 27-of-45 passes for 356 yards. He also was unable to consistently find success in the red zone, evidenced by his single passing TD. Overall, the offense looked uninspired last weekend, especially on the ground. The team’s primary two backs, Nathaniel Peat and Austin Jones, combined for just seven carries and 45 rushing yards. Between them and McKee, the trio accounted for 13 carries for 13 total yards.
The Cougars, meanwhile, are riding a two-game win streak as they head into this important conference game on their home turf. Jayden de Laura shined in their last game, a victory over Oregan State, passing for 399 yards and three touchdowns. Their running game, much like Stanfords, did not find much success, however. Something they will need to remedy if they hope to snag an underdog win here.
The Cougars totaled just 92 yards against the Beavers. And while that is monumentally better than the 13 yards Stanford managed, it was still a pretty sad showing. Especially considered those yards came off 23 carries.
This is one of the tougher games on Saturday’s card to cap with two teams with identical records who match up well. While I think Stanford’s wins were more impressive than Wazzu’s over the last few weeks, the loss to Arizona State has me very suspicious of this offense. That along with the Washington State’s more effective defense is has me leaning to the home team here.
Stanford is giving up 440 yards per game to opposing offenses the last three weeks and I don’t see them miraculously fixing that issue before Saturday. The Cougars have surrendered around 100 yards less per game in that same time.
Pick: Washington State -105 ML
