Steph Curry Is On an Insane Pace to Break Ray Allen’s 3-Point Record
By Peter Dewey
There isn’t an NBA player on the planet who gets as hot from 3-point range as Steph Curry, and the flamethrower was on full display Saturday night when Curry drilled 11 3-pointers on his way to 49 points in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Curry has brought the Golden State Warriors into the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, but his MVP odds still sit at just +1400 on WynnBET behind Joel Embiid (+700) and Nikola Jokic (-2500). Saturday was the fourth time this season Curry hit 11 or more 3-pointers in a game, and he’s had more of those games this season alone than anyone else has in their career.
Absolutely remarkable. Curry is 324-for-755 from beyond the arc this season, and even for his standards, those numbers are other worldly. To put it in perspective, Curry hit 324 3-balls in 79 games during the 2016-17 season. He’s hit as many this year, with much less help on offense, and he’s done it on 34 less attempts in 19 less games.
Very clearly still in his prime, Steph is now pushing the great Ray Allen for the all-time record for most 3-pointers made in a career. The all-time regular season record set by Allen is at 2,973 which Curry, who has 2,819 (and counting), should break by the middle of next season.
Allen also holds the record for total 3-pointers (regular season and playoffs combined) at 3,358. Curry is about to break that one too. In 600, yes 600, fewer games, Curry is just 80 3-pointers behind Allen for that all-time mark.
If Curry is able to hit 3s at the same pace next season as he has during the 2020-21 campaign (5.4 per game), he should easily break both records by the halfway point of next season. There were a lot of questions heading into this season on whether or not Curry could carry a team by himself without Klay Thompson in the lineup, and he’s answered the critics and then some with his play this season.
The Warriors are not one of the top teams in the West, but they will have a chance to get into the final playoff field by winning in the NBA’s Play-In Tournament. The Warriors are four games back of the No. 6 seed with just four to play, but they would be matched up with LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers for a play-in game for the No. 7 seed if the season ended today.
After all of their battles in the NBA Finals over the years, how sweet would it be to see Steph and LeBron play in a winner-take-all game to kick off the playoff season? Steph had some thoughts after last night’s win:
No need for words, Steph. It’s a no brainer. And we most definitely agree.
