TCU Expected to Have Best Season Since 2017
Gary Patterson will enter his 21st season as the head coach of the TCU Horned Frogs, which makes him the second longest tenured coach in College Football, second to only Kirk Ferentz of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
With six championships across three different conferences, Patterson will be expected to lead TCU back to the type of success that he’s used to, after suffering three straight mediocre seasons.
WynnBET has win projections set for the top teams across the country, and it has TCU’s win total for the 2021 season set at 7.5 with each side set at -120 odds. If the Horned Frogs are able to hit the over on that projection, they’ll have their best record since the 2017 season when they played in the Big 12 Conference Championship Game.
I’ll be backing the over on the 7.5 win total, as many signs point toward TCU taking a step in the right direction this season.
Quarterback Max Duggan has proven that he deserves to be the start for TCU, after he threw for a 60.8% completion rate in 2020 which included 10 touchdown passes and only four interceptions. It was a significant step forward from his Freshman campaign, and if he’s able to improve once again, he’ll be one of the top quarterbacks in the conference.
Not only can Duggan get it done threw the air, but he also ran for 526 yards on 116 carries in 2020, scoring 10 rushing touchdowns.
Seniors Taye Barber and Derius Davis will be the top targets for Dugan, and both of them possess the speed and vertical quickness to be deep threats on a weekly basis.
The offensive line will prove to be one of the strengths for TCU this season, as Memphis transfer Obinna Eze will join three returning starters from last year.
Defensive end Ochaun Mathis’ had an impressive 2020 season, including a three sack performance against Texas Tech. He should take another step forward in 2021, and defensive tackle Corey Bethley deciding to return for another season instead of entering the NFL Draft will only help their TCU’s defensive line.
The Horned Frogs aren’t quite at the level of Oklahoma, and they may be a couple steps behind Iowa State as well, but if their defense can manage to stay healthy and Duggan puts together another successful season, expect them to reach eight or nine wins in 2021.
