It’s the Battle for the Iron Skillet this weekend in Dallas as TCU and SMU play for the 101st time. This edition has even more intrigue than normal with all of the shifting of coaches within the rivalry. Sonny Dykes made the jump from the SMU head job over to TCU in the offseason and former SMU offensive coordinator, Rhett Lashlee, is in charge in Dallas now.

The Horned Frogs are 2-0 on the year and have a win over Colorado. SMU is 2-1 and coming off of a loss to Maryland.

TCU vs. SMU Prediction and Pick

Both of these teams have been able to put up points early in this 2022 season. TCU is no longer the defense first team that they were under Gary Patterson. Dykes is an offensive mind who has the Horned Frogs with the ninth best offense in the country through their first two games. It is a small sample, but Max Duggan is leading a good offense even without getting Quentin Johnston involved much. Johnston was expected to be their dynamic No. 1 receiver, but he only has 44 yards through two games.

Tanner Mordecai for SMU has been even better than Duggan and has 10 passing touchdowns through three games. Rashee Rice already has 491 yards receiving and three touchdowns and his best game came against Maryland when he caught 11 passes for 193 yards.

The total is just so high in this one and we have seen something from the TCU defense so far. They haven’t allowed more than 20 points on the year. They also haven’t faced an offense like SMU, but I think the smart play is leaning under. SMU was only able to put up 27 on Marlyand which has the 45th ranked defense in the country compared to TCU which is 31st.

Pick: Under 71 (-102)
