Texas Tech vs. West Virginia Prediction, Odds and Spread for College Football Week 5

After starting the season 3-0, the Texas Tech Red Raiders lost their first game in glorious fashion, giving up 70 points to the Texas Longhorns. That kind of loss can certainly damage a team’s pride. Texas Tech hasn’t been the greatest defensive bunch, but it must have stung to allow 639 yards of total offense and Longhorns quarterback Casey Thompson to throw for 302 yards and five touchdowns.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are 2-2, but both of those losses have come from very respectable teams, the 4-0 Maryland Terrapins and No. 6 Oklahoma; losing to Maryland by six and to Oklahoma by just three. West Virginia has a win against a ranked opponent this season as well, taking down No. 15 Virginia Tech, 27-21.

These are two wildly different defenses, Texas Tech is allowing 33.5 points per game and West Virginia is only allowing 16.8 points per game. Last week the Red Raiders allowed 70 points to Texas, while the Mountaineers only allowed 16 to Oklahoma.

Texas Tech is 3-1 and West Virginia is 2-2, and these records are not indicative in any way the quality of these teams. The Mountaineers record may imply that they’re average, but they are anything but that.

West Virginia doesn’t have any future Heisman trophy winners, but their offense should do just fine against this mess of a Red Raiders defense. I like the Mountaineers at home in Morgantown against the Red Raiders.
