After losing four of their last five games and almost blowing their playoffs hopes, the Arizona Cardinals managed to snag the No. 5 seed in the NFC. While it is a big step down from the days when Arizona led the NFC playoffs race, the Cardinals were in danger of tumbling out of the playoff race entirely.

So, instead of a first-round bye, the Cardinals have a date on the road against the No. 4 seeded Los Angeles Rams. While this isn’t an ideal spot for the Cardinals, they do have one thing going for them due to having to start the postseason on the road.

The Cardinals are the best road team in the NFL this season both in terms of outright wins and also when betting against the spread. Overall the Cardinals are 8-1 as a road team and a perfect 6-0 ATS as an underdog in games away from State Farm Stadium. Their lone road loss came at the hands of the lowly Detroit Lions by an impressive 18 point margin. While it is unusual for a team to be this good on the road, it does provide us with a lot of information about how this team operates away from home.

With the Rams game on the horizon, I wanted to dive deeper into why the Cardinals are so dominant on the road.

Starting with the most obvious, the Cardinals are the third-highest scoring team on the road this season at 29.7 PPG. They trail only the Buffalo Bills (30.8) and the Kansas City Chiefs (30.6) in that category. Take note that the Cardinals score 3.3 points per game more on average in away games. And while the Bills and Chiefs score more on the road, only the Bills have a better scoring defense on the road. The Cardinals are also seventh in the NFL in scoring defense.

This bodes very well for them as +4 underdogs on the road, according to WynnBET, as well as anyone who is betting them to either win or cover. Really, the only slip up the Cardinals has had on the road was a massive fluke loss to the Lions. And, they have actually looked bad at home in recent weeks. So, as counterintuitive as it sounds, the Cardinals are lucky to be away from Arizona this weekend.
