Home Run Picks for Opening Day 2022
Jose Ramirez - Cleveland Guardians (+360)
Jose Ramirez was just signed to a big extension with the Cleveland Guardians, and I expect him to start the season off strong with a dinger on Opening Day against the Kansas City Royals.
He hit 36 home runs last year, and today he'll face Royals starter Zack Greinke, who has stumbled the past couple of years including finishing with a 4.16 ERA in 2021. -- Iain MacMillan
Mike Trout - Los Angeles Angels (+350)
I’m going to be boring with this pick, but I’m taking Mike Trout to hit a home run on Opening Day. Trout has a penchant for starting seasons fast, as he’s a career .315 hitter in April and March with 47 home runs in 205 games.
While Trout has yet to get a hit off of Houston Astros starter Framber Valdez in his career, I think he gets going today. Valdez allowed 12 homers in 22 starts last season, so he’s certainly not immune to getting taken deep, and I like the warm weather in Los Angeles to help the ball fly today. -- Peter Dewey
Juan Soto - Washington Nationals (+400)
Soto is my preseason pick to win NL MVP and I think he starts his campaign off with a bang.
Tylor Megill is making his sophomore debut, and I think the pressure gets to him. He gave up 19 home runs in 18 starts last season. With those numbers, he’s on pace to give up one and I’ll back the best player in this game.
Soto had 19 of his 29 home runs last season against righties. He’s comfortable against them and has no issue taking them yard. -- Donnavan Smoot
David Peralta - Arizona Diamondbacks (+600)
My first inclination was to target Padres hitters against former All Star turned gas can Madison Bumgarner, but he actually improved mightily from the struggles of the 2020 season and got his home run/fly ball percentage down closer to his career average last year.
Instead, I'll focus on David Peralta, who despite facing a tough out in Yu Darvish, has been historically deadly against the veteran right-hander. In 22 at-bats, Peralta has nine hits, three of which have left the yard. He's only struck out five times against an elite-level strikeout artist, so he sees him exceptionally well each time he's at the dish.
Peralta has slugged .818 against Darvish in his career, and should continue to square him up again in ideal playing conditions in Arizona. -- Ben Heisler
