The Green Bay Packers Blew the 2022 NFL Trade Deadline
By Ben Heisler
It was one thing to laugh at the Green Bay Packers this offseason for doing nothing to improve the wide receivers around Aaron Rodgers. After all, the 38-year old back-to-back MVP quarterback and Packers organization were able to call "scoreboard" to the naysayers the last few years with top seeds and multiple division titles.
Now following the 2022 NFL Trade Deadline, and Green Bay sitting at 3-5 nearing the halfway point of the season, it's no laughing matter. And in the midst of their longest losing streak since President Obama was in office, the Packers let an opportunity to fix a glaring hole in their roster slip by, and flat-out blew the NFL Trade Deadline.
Were the Packers Ever Going to Acquire a Wide Receiver?
Through eight weeks of the season, the 2022 Packers rank 26th out of 32 in points scored, and 25th in the league in points per play. A season ago, Davante Adams had 58 receptions through their first eight games en route to 123 for the season. This year, Robert Tonyan, their tight end, leads the Packers in receptions at 35 through eight games, followed by running back Aaron Jones with 30 along with first-year receiver Romeo Doubs.
That's not going to get it done.
According to Josina Anderson, the Packers did have something in the works earlier today to acquire former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Chase Claypool. Problem was, their offer got sniffed out by their division rival in the Chicago Bears, who offered up their second round pick in 2023 for the third-year wideout out of Notre Dame.
Even still, there were plenty of notable receivers reportedly available, including Brandin Cooks of the Houston Texans and Elijah Moore of the New York Jets. Denver Broncos receivers Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler were also reportedly on the trade block, and in the last week, the New York Giants moved former first round draft pick Kadarius Toney to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Vegas Has Zero Confidence in Packers to Turn Their Season Around
Right now, the Packers sit at +5000 to win the Super Bowl at BetMGM Sportsbook, down from +3000 just a week ago!
They're also well off the pace in their pursuit of winning the NFC North, trailing the 6-1 Minnesota Vikings by three full games.
Even making the playoffs no longer favor Green Bay. At FanDuel Sportsbook, the Packers are now -205 to MISS the postseason, despite being projected to win 11 games at the start of the season.
Despite everything stacked against them, the Packers could have still attempted something to help salvage their nightmare season to this point, and refused to do so.
Following their Week 8 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football, Green Bay heads to Detroit for an NFC North matchup vs. the struggling Detroit Lions.
They're expected to win as a 3.5-point road favorite, but the schedule does them no favors the rest of the way. Via Tankathon, the Packers have the seventh-most difficult schedule remaining this year.
