This WNBA Betting Trend Hints at Huge Upset for Storm vs. Aces
By Ben Heisler
Sue Bird's quest for a championship in her final season is off to a soaring start.
In what was supposed to be the most competitive series of the first round, the No. 4 seed Seattle Storm made quick work of their opponent; knocking off the 5-seed Washington Mystics in a two-game sweep in Seattle.
The Storm's new-look offense looked prolific in both games; scoring an average of 89.5 points vs. the league's best defensive rated team in Washington. Breanna Stewart finished tied for the first round lead in points per game (22), along with averaging 11 rebounds and six assists in those games.
They now head to Las Vegas as an underdog both in Game 1, as well as in the series against the Aces. Over at FanDuel Sportsbook, the Aces are -245 to win the best-of-five series, while the Storm are +194. In Game 1, Seattle finds itself as a 5.5-point dog on the road, and +190 on the moneyline to upset Las Vegas.
You can read Joe Summers' betting preview for tonight's matchup HERE, where he explains his analysis for taking the underdog to cover, but a certain trend is on the side of Seattle heading into the desert.
The last time Seattle lost a playoff game with Breanna Stewart on the roster was several years ago; now winners of 12 straight following their two defeats of the Mystics.
Are the Storm Live to Upset the Aces in the WNBA Semifinals?
While I'm on record of saying I believe we'll see the Storm take down the Aces this round, the books are somewhat split on how to treat Seattle heading into this matchup.
At several sportsbooks, playoff odds are still determined by seeding rank, with the league-leading Aces at No.1, followed by the the Sky (no. 2), Sun (3)m and then Seattle. However, at DraftKings Sportsbook, there's been enough money taken in an individual account.
Here are the latest WNBA Playoff Odds
- Las Vegas -150
- Seattle +275
- Chicago +330
- Connecticut +475
