The Oakland Athletics host the Detroit Tigers for Game 2 of their five-game series on Tuesday afternoon. This is the first game of a doubleheader between these two last-place teams. The Tigers have been on a cold streak for the past couple of weeks and had a 2-11 record heading into this series. Their offense has been largely to blame as the Tigers scored two or fewer runs during an 0-5 run leading up to their trip home to face Oakland.

Believe it or not, the A’s were even worse before this series kicked off yesterday. They were on an 0-9 run after getting swept by the Guardians, Rays. and Twins in successive series. They are also struggling to score after being held to one or fewer runs in five of their last eight games.

Tigers vs. Athletics Prediction and Pick

While both offenses are stuck in neutral, the Tigers have been this way all year long. They are tied for the last runs scored in the MLB entering this week and strike out at a very high rate. Frankie Montas gets the nod for Oakland in this game with a 3.44 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. Montas has had an up and down season but has proven capable of shutting down lesser offenses in the league. He’s held the Rangers, Orioles, and Rays to a combined four runs in 26 ⅔ innings pitched. He is better than his ERA suggests after a bad opening day in Philly.

Montas will be going up against Tarik Skubal, making his sixth start of the season. Skubal has been a bit difficult to predict this year with good starts mixed in evenly with bad ones. I think his career numbers of 4.37 and 1.24 are a bit more indicative of his skill level. He pitched well in his last start against the Astros in a 3-2 loss. But, at 1-3, he isn’t doing enough to put the Tigers in a position to win with their weak offense.

Pick: Athletics ML
