The Detroit Tigers head East on Friday to kick off a three-game weekend series in the Bronx against the New York Yankees. The Tigers are in rough shape but surprisingly ended May with a 6-2 record overall against the Twins and Guardians. Despite this recent hot streak, I don’t think they have much to fight back against the Yankees right now.

The Bronx Bombers had a slow end to the month of May with a 5-2 record, but are still the best team in the division, national league, and maybe the entire MLB. What can the fourth-place Tigers really hope to accomplish tonight?

Tigers vs. Yankees Prediction and Pick

The Yankees have a huge advantage on the mound in this series opener. I know that Gerrit Cole has struggled a bit this year and hasn’t looked like the Cy Young hopeful that the Yankees thought they were signing. But, Cole is still one of the best talents in the league. Even if he isn’t playing like it. After a bad game against the Orioles, Cole bounced back last week and held the Rays to one run on two hits over six innings. It was vintage Cole as he struck out 10 and walked three batters. The Yankees still lost after failing to produce at the plate. But Cole did his job. Cole did face the Tigers once already this year but lasted just 1 ⅔ inning back in April after giving up two early runs followed by a rain delay.

While Cole is still a danger to regress, I have much less faith in Elvin Rodrigues tonight starting for the Tigers. E-Rod held the Guardians scoreless over four innings on Sunday, but that only managed to lower his ERA from 9.39 to 6.17. This will be his fourth start of the year and I guess things can only get better. But I don’t expect it to get much better and certainly not against a Yankee team hitting as well as this one is.

No value on the ML here so take the Yankees to win by two and enjoy the fireworks in New York.

Pick: Yankees -1.5 (-160)
