Angels vs. Phillies Prediction and Pick

Assuming the Angels can make it past the first pitch tonight, they have a good shot to get a win here with Michael Lorenzen on the mound. The 30-year-old righty is 5-2 with a 3.19 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 48 innings pitched. His last outing was a bit of a rough one as he gave up three earned against the Blue Jays. But, he went 6 ⅔ innings and left the game in a position to be won. One thing that stands out as a negative for Lorenzen is his K/BB rate of 7/4 in his last two games. Lorenzen has never been a big strikeout guy, but he needs to limit his walks moving forward to avoid any blowouts.

Lorenzen will go head to head against Zack Wheeler who is 3-3 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 51 ⅓ innings. Wheeler was impressed in his last start against a very dangerous Mets team where he went six innings of one-run ball.

While I think this game has a chance to be a great pitching duel, the Angels have played awful enough that I can’t reasonably trust them to win. They are 3-6 ATS in their last nine games and I think they will get beat up by Philly again today. – Matt De Saro

Pick: Phillies -1.5 (+112)

White Sox vs. Rays Prediction and Pick

James Fegan of The Athletic wrote today about how Dylan Cease had changed his slider grip in his last start against the Cubs.  That night he went 7.0 and allowed one unearned run on just two hits.  Cease’s slider velocity was his highest this year as was his spin rate on that pitch.

Fegan also wrote that Cease changed his mentality some, focusing on establishing his inside fastball to set up that more effective slider.

Neither of these teams has had the offense that they were counting on and both are down their star shortstops.  Anderson for Chicago and Wander Franco for Tampa Bay.  Other key contributors have underperformed to this point, Jose Abreu’s OPS is over 80 points below his career mark.  Randy Arozerena is also nearly 100 OPS points below his Rookie of the Year campaign a season ago.

This shapes up to be a low scoring pitching duel and personally I’m a sucker for a, “X pitcher has changed his whatever pitch grip” story.  So let’s ride with Cease and if I’m wrong blame James Fegan for getting me excited.  – Josh Yourish

Pick: White Sox ML +108

Braves vs. Rockies Prediction and Pick

Don't be scared off by the low scoring game on Friday, both offenses should rake on Saturday.

The Braves offense has taken a step back in 2022 after their World Series run, but they still dismantle lefties, third in OPS this season. Not only is Rockies starter Kyle Freeland a southpaw, he struggles at Coors Field. He has a 6.25 ERA this season in home starts and will be in for a short outing against the formidable Braves lineup.

The Braves team total over 6.5 at even money can be worth a look, but I'm going for the full game over because I don't trust the Braves pitching staff on Saturday. The team will send out Spencer Strider, who is making his second start of the season. He will operate as an opener of sorts (he pitched 4.1 innings in his first start earlier this week after being a stretch arm out of the pen), so don't expect more than 2 passes around the lineup for him.

Atlanta has a decent pen but I think we see some sound regression game-to-game, the Rockies lead baseball in home OPS this season with the friendly conditions. – Reed Wallach

LEAN: OVER 11.5 (-115)
