Best WNBA Picks For Tuesday, August 2

  • Liberty -5 vs. Sparks (-110)
  • Aces -3 vs. Mystics (-110)
  • Sun -9.5 vs. Mercury (-110)
  • Wings +8.5 vs. Sky (-110)

Sparks vs. Liberty Best Bets

I'm all in on the Liberty, who have weathered the storm through a rough patch in their schedule and dominated the Mercury in their last game.

New York had a brutal stretch against playoff teams, facing the Chicago Sky, Connecticut Sun, Las Vegas Ace or Washington Mystics in six straight games before facing the Mercury.

Both of these teams have weak offensive ratings this season, but the Liberty are a better defensive team. The Sparks are struggling since losing Liz Cambage, and I don’t trust them on the road where they are just 5-9 this season.

Even though New York has a bad record, I really think this team is underrated this season.  – Peter Dewey

Pick: Liberty -5 (-110)

Aces vs. Mystics Best Bets

Washington has had Las Vegas’ number all season long, beating the Aces in both meetings. The Mystics’ defense has been able to hold up and keep the Aces well under their season average for points per game. Yet, all good things must come to an end. The Aces are on their third four-game winning streak of the season, and they’ll finally break their losing streak to Washington tonight – even on the road.

While I like the Mystics’ defense (first in defensive rating), they’ll need to put up points tonight. In the last matchup with the Aces, Washington won by putting up 87 points. The Mystics will need a similar offensive performance tonight against the Aces No. 1-ranked offense. However, Washington has only scored 90 points once since the All-Star break.

If Las Vegas can increase the pace just a little bit, its offense will get the job done.  – Donnavan Smoot

Pick: Aces -3 (-110)

Mercury vs. Sun Best Bets

If there’s one thing you need to know before betting on this matchup, it’s that the Mercury are awful on the road this season.

Phoenix is 4-12 straight up and 5-10-1 against the spread on the road, and it just got blown out on the road by an inferior Liberty team.

There’s no way I can back the Mercury, even as massive underdogs, against a Sun team that has the second best net rating in the NBA and ranks third in both offensive and defensive rating this season.

Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith are two of the best guards in the league, but I don’t think they’re going to be enough to take down a really well built Sun team with a healthy Jonquel Jones.  – Peter Dewey

Pick: Sun -9.5 (-110)

Wings vs. Sky Best Bets

While I fully trust the Sky to win this game, I don’t think they cover. Chicago is fairly average against the spread this season, going 15-14-1 on the year. When I look at the Sky’s ATS record as an eight-point favorite or better, my skepticism grows. They are 2-5-1 when at least an eight-point favorite. The Sky simply don’t blow teams out when they are supposed to.

Chicago and Dallas have played twice in the last two weeks, and Dallas has covered both times. Although you could point to this and say that Chicago will figure them out, I think it shows Dallas can stay fairly close.

My one worry is the fact that Candace Parker is making her return today. She’s going to be in the starting lineup and won’t be on a minutes restriction. The Sky are getting a great piece back to their lineup, which gives them a huge boost for tonight’s game.

However, Dallas also has a knack for covering games this year. The Wings are 17-11-1 ATS this year. If they can find their offense the same way they’ve done in previous games (scoring 80+ in both games), then they can easily stay within striking distance of the Sky. – Donnavan Smoot

Pick: Wings +8.5 (-110)
