The PGA Tour’s season finale is here, the Tour Championship!

The top 30 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings will compete at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, for the chance to win the $15 million first place prize.

This will be the third season where the Tour Championship will be a handicapped event, with each golfer starting at a certain number of strokes under par depending on where they are in the standings ahead of the event.

Patrick Cantlay Will Start Tour Championship With Two-Stroke Lead

Patrick Cantlay captured the win at the BMW Championship by defeating Bryson DeChambeau in a thrilling playoff. The win made him the only golfer on the PGA Tour to win three events this season, and he catapulted himself into the top of the FedEx Cup Standings.

Under the new format, Cantlay will enter the Tour Championship with a two-stroke lead on the second-place Tony Finau, and a 10-stroke lead on the golfers who enter the event ranked 26th-30th in the FedEx Cup Standings.

Despite the lead, Cantlay is listed second on the odds list to win the event at +425. Jon Rahm, who enters the tournament in fourth place, will start four-strokes back from Cantlay, but oddsmakers believe that the No. 1 golfer in the world can make up that ground.

How Many Golfers Have a Realistic Chance of Winning the Tour Championship?

With this being only the third season with the new format, we don’t have a large sample size for how far down the standings do you have to go to find golfers who have a realistic shot at winning this weekend.

Rory McIlroy won the Tour Championship in 2019, and he started the event at five-under par, which is where Cameron Smith starts the event this week at +2500 odds.

Last year, Dustin Johnson, who entered the tournament in first place, ran away with it. He ended up finishing three strokes clear from Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele.

If you’re going to bet on someone to win the Tour Championship, I wouldn’t look at anyone who’s starting lower on the leaderboard than 3-under par. While Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka may be tempting, eight strokes may be too big a hill to climb this weekend.
