Travis Etienne Preparing for Big Receiving Role with Jaguars
By Peter Dewey
Clemson University fans are going to have their eyes on the Jacksonville Jaguars this season after the Jags used two first-round picks on Clemson players in quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne.
While Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has already shown some affinity for second-year running back James Robinson, Etienne seems to be in line for a major role as a receiver in his rookie season.
"So now I am just like kind of learning real receiver routes and having Trev here to go just do simple things as run routes outside and just kind of go over it by ourselves, [it] has really been great for me and really helped me just speed up that process," Etienne said.
WynnBET has Lawrence as the favorite to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award at +275 odds, but Etienne is a value pick at +2200. If the running back is going to have a role both out of the backfield and as a receiver, he could see enough touches to push to be the top back in this year’s rookie class.
While Javonte Williams and Najee Harris both seem primed for major roles, Etienne is the third running back on the odds list for Rookie of the Year. When you consider that a running back has won three of the last six years, Etienne’s odds look like a bargain entering the season.
Obviously, the workload for Robinson will be key in whether or not Etienne sees the volume to put up ROTY numbers, but if he’s going to be involved in multiple facets of the offense, it’s going to bode well for his outlook in 2021.
