Trea Turner and Max Muncy Enter Discussion for NL MVP
The race for the American League MVP award is all but settled, but that’s certainly not the case in the National League.
Fernando Tatis Jr. has been the betting favorite for the majority of the season, and he’s still holding on to that spot with -170 odds at WynnBET, but two new names have appeared near the top of the oddsboard.
Trea Turner is now second on the odds list to win the award at +325, and Max Muncy is third on the list at +400. Freddie Freeman is also in contention at +750.
With Tatis Jr. recently being added to the 10-day injured list with a shoulder injury, the window is open for one of the other players to take the top spot.
Turner was recently acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a blockbuster trade which saw both him and former Cy Young winner Max Scherzer being shipped from Washington to Los Angeles. He holds a .322 batting average this season, while recording 18 home runs and an OPS of .890.
Turner’s new teammate, Max Muncy, is also in contention for National League MVP. The infielder has a .279 batting average this season but he’s fourth in Major League Baseball in on base percentage at .413. He’s also hit 22 home runs and has batted in 62 runners.
Finally, the 2020 MVP winner, Freddie Freeman, also has his name in the mix to win the award for the second straight season. The 31-year old has 23 home runs, a .289 batting average, and a .393 on base percentage. He had a slow start to his season, but has turned it on in recent months. A strong finish will put him among the favorites to win the award.
With that being said, Tatis Jr. is still the deserving favorite at -170. As long as his injury doesn’t keep him out for an extended period of time, the new face of baseball should capture the first MVP award of his career, and I’d expect more to follow.
