Troy vs. Coastal Carolina Prediction, Odds, Spread and Over/Under for College Football Week 9

Thursday night in Week 9 features a showdown between the Troy Trojans and Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. These two teams are currently tied atop the Sun Belt East division, making this a massive game for both sides. 

Troy heads to Brooks Stadium on the heels of a big win over Texas State 31-28. It was their second win in a row but just fourth on the season. It is worth noting that Troy was on their way to losing that game but a timely interception sealed the win for the Trojans. 

No. 24 Coastal Carolina is looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season to Appalachian State in Week 8. The loss snapped its perfect season and a three-game ATS win streak.

The question in this game to me is whether or not Troy will be able to slow down Coastal Carolina’s rushing attack. The team’s offense is far and away the better unit overall, but rushing depth is the Chanticleers' bread and butter.

Coastal Carolina ranks fifth in the nation with yards per rush average of 5.9 and ranks 13th with 227.3 yards rushing per game. For comparison, Troy’s total offense ranks 103rd with 333.5 yards per game. The Chanticleers rank sixth with 508.5 yards of total offense per game. 

However, Troy does have the nation’s fifth-ranked rushing defense in terms of yards allowed per rush at 2.5. While that is great and all, Coastal Carolina is not a one-dimensional team. 

Its passing attack ranks first in the country in completion percentage at 74.10% and first in yards per pass at 12.1. The Chanticleers don’t pass that much admittedly, ranking 115th in the nation with a 38 percent pass rate. But, when they do pass, they do so effectively.

This has me leaning heavily on Coastal Carolina on Thursday. Even if Troy manages to stuff the Chanticleers on the ground, they are good enough to shift their game plan and air it out. 

Coastal Carolina is a much better team with a lot more to play for and will be made coming off a tough-luck loss in Week 8.
