Twins vs. Athletics Prediction and Odds for Wednesday, May 18 (Sonny Gray Looks to Grow Scoreless IP Streak vs OAK)
By Matt De Saro
The Minnesota Twins look to pad their lead in the AL Central when they face off against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon. The Twins have so far enjoyed a 4-0 record against the A’s after sweeping them last week and taking Game 1 of this series on Monday. With the Chicago White Sox picking up speed in second place, the Twins need to keep winning if they hope to maintain their multi-game lead.
Luckily for Minnesota, the A’s haven’t been putting up much of a fight against anyone so far this year. They are dead last in the AL West, well below.500, and have just one series win since the first week of the season.

Twins vs. Athletics Prediction and Pick
As if things were going bad enough for the A’s, they are forced to start 1-6 Daulton Jefferies in this game. To be fair, Jefferies’ record isn’t totally on him as the A’s have scored one run or less in five of his six last starts. This just goes to show how awful this team can be on a bad day. Jefferies is not free of the blame though with a 4.84 ERA and just 23 strikeouts in 35 ⅓ innings.
I will say I'm impressed by his 11:0 K/BB rate in his last three games. But, he still gave up a combined 12 runs in those starts.
The Twins counter with Sonny Gray who is making his fifth start of the year after missing a couple of weeks due to injury. He’s been much better since his return with a 2.16 ERA in May in 8 ⅓ innings. He hasn’t pitched more than 4 ⅔ innings in either of his four starts and doesn’t look totally settled in yet. I do believe that this is a great matchup for him to get back on track against his former team.
Pick: Twins ML (-145)
