Two Ranked PAC 12 Favorites Fall as ASU, UCLA Upset by BYU, Fresno State
By Thomas Snodgrass
The PAC 12 has been full of surprises this year.
So far in 2021, the FCS Montana Grizzlies defeated the No. 20 Washington Huskies, No. 12 Oregon Ducks knocked off No. 3 Ohio State, No. 14 USC were slapped around at home by a big underdog in conference rival Stanford (USC gave head coach Clay Helton his walking papers as a result), BYU has picked off two ranked PAC 12 teams in back-to-back weeks with No. 21 Utah and and No. 19 Arizona State, and Fresno State defeated No. 13 UCLA this week, and we’re only three weeks in.
The PAC 12 is the Conference of Chaos.
WynnBET Sportsbook had BYU as a +3.5-point home underdog entering their matchup with Arizona State, and the Cougars pulled off the upset, 27-17.
BYU’s defense won the important turnover battle, forcing two interceptions from ASU quarterback Jayden Daniels and causing the Sun Devils offense to fumble three times, scooping up two of them.
Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards will have to work on his team’s discipline after they shot themselves in the foot this week, taking 17 penalties on the night. The Cougars only had three penalties; tip of the cap to Kalani Sitake for having his team ready to go.
Don’t feel bad, Herm Edwards. Chip Kelly’s UCLA Bruins would go down, too.
WynnBET Sportsbook had the Bruins as 11-point favorites at home against the Fresno State Bulldogs, and with 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Fresno State wide receiver Jalen Cropper catches a touchdown from quarterback Jake Haener, and the Bulldogs take it, 40-37.
The Bruins’ defense has struggled all year with their passing defense, and Haener torched them again this week, collecting 455 passing yards and a crucial touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter. UCLA’s defense as a whole would struggle in this one, giving up 569 total yards to the Bulldogs and not being able to get the Fresno offense off the field, losing the time of possession battle by a large margin (40:20 for Fresno, 19:40 for UCLA).
Oregon is the last undefeated PAC 12 team after Week 3.
