Tyreek Hill Doesn't Make Dolphins a Playoff Team

The Miami Dolphins continued their aggressive offseason yesterday, striking a deal for former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

The Dolphins have surrounded Tua Tagovailoa with the best weapons he’s had since playing at Alabama. With a new coach, upgraded passing weapons and faith in their quarterback, the Dolphins expect to make a playoff run. 

That’s not happening.

WynnBET has moved the Dolphins' odds to win the Super Bowl up to +5000. The Dolphins missed the playoffs last season, and Tyreek Hill’s presence won’t change that, as I explained on Thursday's episode of "Bet & Breakfast" below. 

Miami started last season 1-7. It got back into the playoff race courtesy of a seven-game winning streak, but that was a fraudulent streak. All seven of those wins came against teams that missed the playoffs, and five of those wins came against teams picking in the top 6 of the draft (Miami beat the Jets twice). 

Obviously the Dolphins’ offense will improve, but the defense still has questions. Miami’s defense was 15th in points allowed and 16th in yards allowed. The Dolphins were also 19th in opponent 3rd down percentage. They were an average unit at best, which is only okay if the offense is humming – yet the jury is still out on Tagovailoa. 

Aside from just the Dolphins, the rest of the AFC is filled with teams that I would trust more to make the playoffs. In alphabetical order, I like the following teams to finish ahead of the Dolphins, as well as their Super Bowl odds over at WynnBET.

  • Browns (+1500)
  • Chargers (+1500)
  • Chiefs (+1000)

While I understand the Raiders pick might be a little bold, I still have eight teams firmly ahead of the Dolphins. In a division with the Bills and the Patriots, there won’t be enough wins to go around. The Dolphins will be the ones missing out.
