The state of Massachusetts has some pretty good mid-major basketball right now. The UMass Lowell River Hawks are 9-1 this season and tonight they’ll take on in-state rival UMass. The Minutemen are 7-1 with a Power 5 win over Colorado.

This rivalry is typically settled on the ice as these are two powers of college hockey, but this time they’ll do it on the hardwood.

Can Frank Martin’s team keep things rolling heading into Atlantic 10 play? Let’s see what Vegas thinks about that and check the odds for this one.

UMass Lowell vs. UMass Odds, Spread and Total

UMass Lowell vs. UMass Prediction and Pick

UMass Lowell has a pretty high-powered offense and that has led them to their great record. The River Hawks are averaging 83.4 points per game and 74.7 possessions a game which is 49th in the country. That is a good indicator of offensive success, because those teams are getting more opportunities, even if they are slightly less efficient. Shooting doesn’t always translate night to night, but possessions does.

The Minutemen don’t score at the same rate. They average 72.1 points a game and are 103rd in possessions a game. Neither team has a guy who can take over offensively, Noah Fernandes leads the Minutemen in scoring at just 11.4 points a game, but he is out with the same ankle injury that kept him off the floor last game.

If the Minutemen don’t have their leading scorer against a lethal offensive team like the River Hawks then I can’t trust them to keep up. I’ll take the underdog on the moneyline.
