The dogs are barking early in the NFL Week 1 slate.

Heading into the late-afternoon actions, underdogs are 8-2 against the spread for a cover rate of 80%.

After the Cowboys covered as 9-point underdogs against the Buccaneers in the opening game of the 2021 season, teams getting points continued to perform on Sunday.

Not only are underdogs covering the spread, but they’re also winning games outright. Through the first ten games of Week 1, underdogs are 6-4 straight up. The Steelers are the biggest underdog to cash so far, upsetting the Bills are 6.5-point underdogs. They were available at +225 on the moneyline prior to kickoff.

The other five underdogs to win outright (Cardinals, Eagles, Bengals, Texans, and Chargers) were ‘dogs of 3.5-points or fewer.

The Browns, Saints, Dolphins, Giants, Bears, and Raiders will try to continue the trend as Week 1 action continues. The biggest underdog left on the slate is the Chicago Bears who are massive 9-point underdogs against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. If they manage to win the game, they’d be the biggest underdog to win in Week 1.

Along with underdogs, road teams are also finding success early. They’re 6-4 ATS through the first ten games of the week.

One of the underdogs to cash on the spread on Sunday was the Detroit Lions, who made a miraculous comeback by scoring 16 unanswered points including a recovered onside kick to get the backdoor cover as 8.5-point underdogs. Unfortunately for them, it wasn’t enough for them to get the straight up victory.

They say good teams win, but great teams cover. Does that make the Lions a great team?
