As the football preseason gears up, the golf season winds down.

This week's Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club serves as the regular season finale for the 2021-22 PGA Tour season.

Most golfers have their spots in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and will compete this week to simply improve their standing, win some money, and get in form for when it counts next week.

With that being said, many others are competing for their livelihood. Unless you have special exemption from winning a tournament, a golfer needs to finish in the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings in order to secure their PGA Tour card for next season. If they don't, they return to the Korn Ferry Tour and try to fight their way back to the top.

Let's look at the top 10 in the FedEx Cup Standings, as well as a few names who are on the bubble heading into the season finale.

Top 10 FedEx Cup Standings

  1. Scottie Scheffler - 3,556
  2. Cameron Smith - 2,335
  3. Sam Burns - 2,275

  7. Tony Finau - 1,912
  8. Justin Thomas - 1,783

Will Rickie Fowler Make the FedEx Cup Playoffs?

The biggest and most recognizable name on the bubble, is fan-favorite Rickie Fowler.

Luckily for him, he still has exemption on the Tour for one more year for his 2015 Players Championship victory, followed by his 2019 win at the WM Phoenix Open. Still, Fowler is on the verge of missing the FedEx Cup Playoffs for the second straight season. If he doesn't turn things around, next year might be a farewell Tour for the 33-year old.

Fowler still has a chance to qualify, he just needs a strong showing at this week's Wyndham Championship. Considering he's coming off a missed cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and hasn't finished in the top 25 since the PGA Championship in May, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Who Will Win the FedEx Cup Playoffs?

With two playoff tournaments to go before the Tour Championship, I would expect the leaderboard to make some movements before the finale in Atlanta.

There are more FedEx Cup points available than normal tournaments at the Northern Trust and the BMW Championship, so whoever wins those events will help themselves immensely.

It's important to note that the Tour Championship will be in the fourth year of its new format. Now, each player will start a certain amount of strokes under par, depending on where they rank in the standings at the conclusion of the BMW Championship.

Of the three years, two of the winners were leading in points heading into the Tour Championship. The other year, Rory McIlroy entered the tournament in 5th place, and walked away with the FedEx Cup after posting a final score of 18-under par.

So, if you're going to bet on someone to win the FedEx Cup, you should bank on them being in at least 5th place by the time the Tour Championship takes place.
