For a majority of the MLB season, it was a two-man race for the American League MVP between Shohei Ohtani and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

That isn’t the case anymore.

Shohei Ohtani has separated himself from the pack and is now the overwhelming favorite to win his first MVP award. WynnBET has his odds to win set at -1000, which is an implied probability of 90.91%. In betting terms, Ohtani is a near virtual lock.

The duel-threat player is leading the Majors in home runs with 37 dingers, three clear of Guerrero Jr. who had 34. Not only is he leading all of baseball in home runs, but the Japanese-born player also has a 3.04 ERA and a 5-1 record through 15 starts on the mound.

Ohtani will likely be adding to his trophy collection. He was named the American League rookie of the year in 2018.

In order for Guerrero Jr. (+325) to have a chance to catch Ohtani, he will likely need to capture the triple crown. He’s leading the Majors in runs batted in with 85, three ahead of Ohtani, and he’s third in batting average at .328.

If he can take the lead in batting average and home runs while maintaining his top spot in RBIs, he would become only the second baseball player to win the batting triple crown since 1967. Miguel Cabrera achieved the feat with the Detroit Tigers in 2012.

No other player in the American League has a realistic shot at MVP. Matt Olson and Mike Trout are next on the odds list at +4000, but both Ohtani and Guerrero Jr. would basically need to go down with a season ending injury in their next game for anyone else to have a chance.

Ohtani is scheduled to get his next start on Wednesday night against the Texas Rangers.
