Virginia Tech vs. Old Dominion Prediction, Odds, Spread and Over/Under for College Football Week 1
By Reed Wallach
The Brent Pry era gets started on the road against a frisky in-state foe.
Virginia Tech's new coach leads the Hokies to Old Dominion, who qualified for a bowl last season on Friday night in what could be a live underdog on Friday night. The Monarchs won their last five games last season before losing in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. However, are these two teams trending in different directions heading into 2022?
Let's check out the odds for this Virginia showdown in Week 1:
Virginia Tech vs. Old Dominion Odds, Spread and Total
Virginia Tech vs. Old Dominion Betting Trends
- Old Dominion beat Virginia Tech 49-35 in 2018 as a 27-point underdog
- Old Dominion went 3-1 against the spread as a home underdog and 4-2 straight up at home
- Virginia Tech is 8-22 ATS a road favorite over the last 10 years
Virginia Tech vs. Old Dominion Prediction and Pick
Do not just pencil in a Virginia Tech victory here. This is an Old Dominion team entering with a lot of momentum after a strong finish to the 2021 season and the Hokies enter 2022 with a lot of questions.
The defense should be strong in Blacksburg under former Penn State defensive coordinator Pry, but the offense is counting on Grant Wells, a Marshall transfer who struggled against ODU last season (30 completions on 46 attempts for 299 yards with two touchdowns, two interceptions and three sacks).
The Hokies have only four returning starters on offense and going on the road for an opener can lead to a clunky start. While ODU is a Sun Belt defense, they do return seven starters and showed a decent run defense, allowing 3.52 yards per carry.
On offense, Hayden Wolff returns under center after finishing the season strong. He started seven games and passed for 1,933 yards. Overall, 10 starters are back including 1,000-yard receiver Ali Jennings and tight end Zack Kuntz (73 receptions). Former Penn State offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne is the head coach at ODU and has worked with Pry, could he have a leg up on the Hokies heading into this one?
The Monarchs are a live underdog on Friday night, I love them at over a touchdown and will be sprinkling on the moneyline.
