The only upside to the end of the college football season as far as I can see, is that it signals the beginning of my preseason baseball research. Baseball is my favorite sport to watch, break down and bet on, so you can imagine why this is my favorite time of the year.

While I was poking around on WynnBET Sportsbook this afternoon, killing time before college basketball games tipped off, I noticed that several MLB futures have been released. One, in particular, caught my eye: 2022 odds to win the American League Cy Young Award.

So, I thought what better way to get an early start on the upcoming season than to break down some of the best pitchers in the AL. Let's review the odds at WynnBET and then break down some noteworthy contenders.

Odds to win the 2022 AL Cy Young Award

  • Gerrit Cole | +400
  • Chris Sale | +800
  • Shane Bieber | +800
  • Alek Manoah | +1500
  • Lance Lynn | +1500
  • Lance McCullers Jr. | +1500
  • Lucas Giolito | +1500
  • Robbie Ray | +1500
  • Frankie Montas | +2000
  • Kevin Gausman | +2000
  • Nathan Eovaldi | +2000
  • Shohei Ohtani | +2000

Gerrit Cole NYY | +400

Gerrit Cole might be the best pitcher in baseball yet to win a Cy Young Award. He finished second in voting two of the last three years and in the top five in each of the last four. He should be a logical favorite to win right?

Well, it depends on how he adjusts to the banning of “sticky substances.” Cole admitted that it’s hard to grip the ball at times and has used the stuff to help as most pitchers in the league did. However, after the ban, Cole’s ERA was 4.15. While he was also dealing with a hamstring injury, the timing of his slump does make you wonder.

Lance McCullers Jr. HOU | +1500

McCullers is one of the only players on this list that is not the No. 1 option on their team. Officially, Justin Verlander is the first starter for the Astros. However, this does not automatically mean that McCullers is playing second fiddle to anyone on this team. McCullers will once again be relied upon as Verlander is 39 years old and coming off Tommy John.

The 28-year-old ace finished seventh in the AL voting with a 13-5 record, 3.16 ERA, and 1.22 WHIP. Starter No. 1 or not, McCullers is the true top dog in Houston.
