The Memphis Grizzlies could be without forward Jaren Jackson Jr. to open the 2022-23 season after he underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot back in late June.

The timetable for Jackson puts him at an early November return if he makes the short side of the 4-to-6 month timetable. In a worst-case scenario, Jackson is going to be out until the start of January.

Either way, it's a major loss for the Grizzlies, but there have been some positive steps for the young forward in his recovery. The sooner he can return the better for Memphis, as the team was the No. 2 seed in the West last season and is looking repeat that performance.

Latest Injury Update for Jaren Jackson Jr.

Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins said recently that Jackson is starting to do more on the court, but he has still yet to undergo contact.

"He's starting to do a little more on the court," Jenkins said. "No contact still. Full-court running, individual vitamins. He's not just stationary; he's doing a little bit more dynamic. A step in the right direction compared to how camp started."

At Memphis' last preseason game, Jackson was involved in the shooting drills with the team prior to the game.

Last season, Jackson averaged 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists and a league-high 2.3 blocks per game. He shot 41.5 percent from the field and 31.9 percent from beyond the arc.

Jackson is the anchor of the Grizzlies' defense, so the longer he is out the more Xavier Tillman, Brandon Clarke, David Roddy and others will need to step up at the forward position.
