The Tampa Bay Rays are one of the most well-built rosters in baseball, able to withstand the loss of stars and remain competitive. The Rays are 28-20 on the year as of this writing, right in the heart of the AL Pennant race despite not having ace Tyler Glasnow.

Glasnow had Tommy John surgery in August of 2021, with the expectation that he would miss all of the 2022 season. He also underwent arthroscopic ankle surgery this past March, which shouldn't factor into his rehab.

Glasnow was at the center of Major League Baseball's crackdown on foreign substances last season, citing that they may have played a role in his partially torn UCL.

Tyler Glasnow Latest Injury Update

Glasnow started throwing from 90 feet on April 27th in line with his rehab from Tommy John surgery as well as arthroscopic ankle surgery.

"Glasnow, working his way back from Tommy John surgery, underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his right ankle on Friday," wrote Adam Berry of MLB.com.

"But the 28-year-old right-hander said the procedure won’t set back his recovery timeline. It was something he had been putting off for years, and his lengthy Tommy John rehabilitation process afforded him the time necessary to take care of it."

“If I don't do it now, then when would I ever do it?” Glasnow said. “I'm happy I got it. My foot feels really good.”

The ankle doesn't seem to be a long term injury and is more maintenance driven. However, his rehab from Tommy John surgery continues to leave him on the sidelines. In that same report it was noted that while Glasnow expressed optimism that he could pitch by the end of this season -- and potentially in the playoffs -- the Rays have tempered expectations by saying that the "initial expectation was that he would miss the entire season."

The UCL injury was the first serious one of Glasnow's career. While the ankle injury seemed to be a nagging concern that led to the surgery, Glasnow does appear set to have a healthy career after he returns to the mound.
