The New York Rangers are back in the postseason for just the second time in the last five seasons after finishing in second place in the Metropolitan Division.

They'll take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the NHL playoffs after finishing the regular season with a 52-24-6 record.

BetSided's Iain MacMillan has you covered with a preview for Game 1 tonight, but let's first take a look at the Rangers' playoff history as they try to make a run at the Stanley Cup:

When Was the Last Time the Rangers Won the Stanley Cup?

The Rangers' last won the Stanley Cup in 1994. Hey, their title drought is as old as I am! As a franchise that's been around since 1927, New York had had plenty of time to rack up accolades.

And they certainly did early in franchise history. They've won the Stanley Cup four times (1928, 1933, 1940, and 1994) but a majority of their success literally came nearly 100 years ago.

Back in 2014, the Rangers lost in the Stanley Cup Finals but otherwise haven't escaped the Conference Finals since their 1994 title season.

Rangers Odds to Win Eastern Conference, Stanley Cup

WynnBET Sportsbook currently has the Rangers listed at +600 to win the Eastern Conference and +1200 to win the Stanley Cup.

These odds represent the fourth-lowest to win the East and sixth-lowest to win a championship. The Rangers' hopes primarily lie on the shoulders of superstar goalie Igor Shesterkin, who was without question the best goaltender in hockey this season.

If New York is to win its first title in 28 years, it's going to be because of Shesterkin. If you're going to have a superstar, goalie is certainly a good position to pick. The Rangers are favored over the Penguins in the first round and would face the winner of the Hurricanes vs Bruins series if they advance.
