Which NBA Teams Are Best Against the Spread as Underdog?
By Peter Dewey
We’re reaching the most important part of the NBA regular season, as the Christmas Day slate begins the mad dash for playoff spots in the respective conferences.
We’ve already broken down the best teams as favorites against the spread this season, but what about teams as the underdog?
When you’re betting at WynnBET, these are a few teams that you should keep your eye on when they are an underdog this season.
Miami Heat
Erik Spoelstra’s team has dealt with injuries to Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler, but it still has been the best team in the NBA at covering the spread as an underdog.
The Heat are 10-2 against the spread as a dog (covering 83.3 percent of the time), and they are 20-13 overall this season.
Miami won’t have as many games as a dog once Butler and Adebayo return, but the supporting cast has certainly stepped up this season.
Brooklyn Nets
It’s rare that you will ever see the Nets as an underdog, although they are on Christmas Day with Kevin Durant expected to be out, and there’s a reason for that.
Brooklyn is 3-1 against the spread as an underdog this season, and it currently holds the best record in the Eastern Conference. The Nets are a tough team to beat at all, so when you can get them with the points, it’s hard to pass up.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavaliers are the only team to make both lists, as they are also the best team in the NBA against the spread overall.
Cleveland is 16-6-1 as an underdog, but there’s a chance that it is going to see a few more games as a favorite going forward given its strong start to the season.
Indiana Pacers
The Pacers are one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference this season (14-19 overall), but they’ve done a good job covering the spread as an underdog.
In 12 games as a dog this season, Indiana is 8-4 against the spread, covering at a 66.7 percent clip.
Indiana isn’t winning many of these games, averaging a margin of victory of negative-1.0 as an underdog, but it has found a way to cover this season.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Thunder are going to be underdogs just about every night as they continue their rebuild, but OKC has delivered in that spot this season.
The Thunder are 19-10 against the spread as an underdog, registering the most ATS wins as a dog of any team in the NBA.
The Thunder have covered in their last five games as an underdog and have picked up three straight up wins as well.
