Let's Set Odds: Which Receiver Will Get Next Big Contract Extension?
By Matt De Saro
The apex of wide receiver contracts saw a big jump this season with several long-term megadeals being signed. Tyreek Hill became the highest-paid wide receiver in the league from a deal worth $120 million over four years with $72.2 million guaranteed. The Dolphins swooped in after talks with the Chiefs fell apart and snagged one of the biggest talents in the league. Hill was hunting for a bigger contract than the one that the Raiders offered Davonte Adams. And he got it. Adams’ contract with Las Vegas is for just $141.25 million over five years. Mere peasant pay compared to Hill’s deal.
The remaining top-5 highest paid WRs are DeAndre Hopkins (ARI), Stefon Diggs (BUF), and DJ Moore (CAR). Diggs agreed this morning to a four-year $104 million extension. The money is still flying around and there are still big extensions to be signed.
So where do we go from here? Well, I think that Hill’s contract doesn’t get beaten this offseason. But, there are still a few big wideout deals still to be signed. WynnBET Sportsbook doesn't have odds for this prop but I thought it would be fun to set our own on which WR gets the next big extension.
Terry McLaurin +150
Every veteran WR signed to a big contract extension is great news for Scary Terry. The Washington Commanders need to retain McLaurin’s services long-term and it won’t be cheap. With every contract handed out, the next extension down the line is naturally affected. In this case, I think McLaurin is the next logical choice to be in that line.
And, I think the Commanders come out of their pockets for a guy coming off back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons. This is even more impressive when you realize that McLaurin has played for eight different starting quarterbacks in three years. Hopefully, Carson Wentz can stick around long enough to develop a rapport with McLaurin. I think he could get a bigger contract than Moore, but probably not the size that Diggs got.
Deebo Samuel +250
Samuel is another guy who will benefit massively from the megadeals already signed this offseason. Deebo is coming out of a breakout year in which he blew the doors off opposing defenses in the second half of the season. Last year was the first season Samuel managed to play more than 11 games and he made the most of it. I think that the Diggs deal sets off the next cluster of wideouts to get extensions and Samuel will be one of those guys. I think that Samuel’s contract falls short of the $100 million mark due to his injury history. But, he is still going to get paid.
