The battle for Chicago kicks off today between a pair of teams hoping to turn their seasons around as the 9-13 Cubs host the 9-13 White Sox at 7:40 PM EST.

Despite picking up a 3-0 win yesterday behind a dominant performance from Dylan Cease, the White Sox are a pathetic 3-11 in their last 14 contests. The Cubs, meanwhile, won yesterday as well to improve to 3-9 over their previous 12. So things aren't great for either Chicago squad.

But each will send an excellent pitcher to the mound today. Michael Kopech and his sparkling 1.42 ERA gets the nod for the White Sox to take on Drew Smyly of the Cubs. Not to be outdone, Smyly has a 2.79 ERA himself and both starters have to feel confident about shutting these offenses down.

So who has the edge in the war for Chicago supremacy? Will Kopech propel the White Sox to a road win or will Smyly and the Cubs emerge victorious?

Here are the odds from WynnBET Sportsbook to help us determine those answers ahead of this White Sox vs Cubs matchup:

*UPDATE*

Cubs starting pitcher Drew Smyly has been placed on the bereavement list. Scott Effross will open in a bullpen game for Chicago.

White Sox vs Cubs Prediction and Pick

Both of these pitchers have been sensational to start 2022. Michael Kopech has yet to give up more than three hits in any of his four starts on his way to a 1.42 ERA while Drew Smyly has surrendered two runs or fewer in three of his four outings.

They've accomplished strong starts in different ways, though. Kopech is in the 96th percentile in fastball spin rate and allows his defense to help him, and Smyly is a master at limiting hard contact. The Cubs lefty ranks in the 99th percentile in average exit velocity and hasn't allowed more than one walk in a single start.

But the visitors from the southside have the edge today. The White Sox have the second-highest OPS against left-handed pitchers in the league and though their offense overall hasn't been particularly impressive, they should be able to get to Smyly. He's given up six earned runs over his last two starts and this will be the best lineup he's faced.

And it's impossible to ignore just how bad the Cubs lineup is performing right now. They've got five runs total in their last four games and Kopech has been dominant.

I think the White Sox are due for a breakout. Their roster is too talented to stay this bad for very long. Give me the visitors to win on the run line against a southpaw for the second straight day.

Pick: White Sox -1.5 (+120)
