Whether they are White or Red, Sox are underperforming so far this season. As far as surprises in the NL go, the White Sox might take the cake over the first month of the year. Chicago was expected to run off with the AL Central as they did in 2021. However, after the first 25 games, the White Sox don’t even have a winning record and are second in the division. But, Chicago is on the upswing after winning their last four games in a row including the series opener with Boston.

Boston, on the other hand, continues to play badly and is not on an upswing of any kind. The Red Sox are 1-5 in their last six games and were outscored 22-7 in their last three. The Red Sox are the worst team in the AL East at 10-17.  Boston enters this game carrying the shame associated with having a worse record than Baltimore this deep into the season.

White Sox vs. Red Sox Prediction and Pick

The Red Sox enter this game having lost nine of their last 12 games and look nothing like the team many of us expected to see this year. And while the White Sox are on a hot streak, they are still a sub .500 team. The biggest reason for this on both sides is a lack of success at the plate.

For the Red Sox, it comes down to a total failure to put the ball in play. The Red Sox have the third-worst on-base percentage in the league at .280 along with the 32nd ranked slugging percentage at .346.

Things have been even worse in Chicago through their first 25 games. The White Sox rank 23rd in batting average, 27th in runs per game, and 30th in walks earned. Chicago has picked up the pace, but it remains to be seen if they can keep it up long-term.

In the meantime, this game feels like a solid play on the under. But not so fast. Nick Pivetta is getting another start for the Red Sox despite an ERA of 7.84. The fact that this guy has a job and a 5.26 career ERA is mind-boggling. But the Red Sox are sending him back out there, like Apollo Creed in the second round against Ivan Drago.

I’m willing to bet that the White Sox continue their upswing against Pivetta on Saturday. At no point, this season, or any season, has he looked like a guy who belongs on a starting rotation at the MLB level. Grab the White Sox as Pivetta falls to 0-5.

Pick: White Sox -129 ML
